Table 1 Sub-test size and Frequencies of factors. (Nâ =300) Techniques To decide if there was an association between dread of wrongdoing and different elements that might impact or are related with each individual’s observations, a chi-square r x c test for autonomy was led on the gathered information. This test was picked to be led for this investigation because of the considerable number of factors being utilized are unmitigated with different qualities. In this manner meeting two suspicions for the chi-square test for autonomy; every absolute variable (Nominal or Ordinal) and should comprise of at least two clear cut factors. The other essential supposition of the chi-test for freedom, which is the normal recurrence ought not dip under five in over 25% of the cells in a possibility table was additionally met. The outcomes showed just two (4.55%) cells falling underneath the normal recurrence tally of five, with the base being 2.08, thusly not adding to over 25% cells of the possibility tables. Results A chi-square r x c test for freedom was performed to look at the relationship or relationship between dread of wrongdoing and different elements that added to every members discernments. Inside this examination there were different factors to be inspected to decide the relationship with dread of wrongdoing, the noteworthy discoveries will be talked about preceding outcomes table 2. The connection between the dependant variable dreadful/not frightful and the variable period of member, indicated that there was a huge affiliation (Xâ ² (3, N=300) = 106.59, p ≠¤ .001). The Cramer’s V was 0.59, along these lines bringing about around 35% change of frequencies of dread can be clari fied by the difference old enough. Inside the variable news and data, 46.7% of members saw the TV expanded dread of wrongdoing contrasted with 3.3% because of the radio, 7.0% because of print, 1.3% because of the web and 0% because of different sources. The connection between the dependant variable and the variable of news and data, demonstrated that there was likewise a critical affiliation (Xâ ² (4, N=300) = 59.39, p ≠¤ .001). The Cramer’s V was .445, along these lines bringing about roughly 20% change of frequencies of dread can be clarified by the variable of news and data. Both the Age variable and the news and data variable indicated factually higher relationship with dread of wrongdoing, speaking to factors from segment qualities and news and data; contrasted with interchange factors, especially network attributes. Further definite aftereffects of factors appeared in table 2. Table 2 Consequences of chi-square test on factors related with dread on wrongdoing End The factors age and news and data both have a huge relationship with the dread of wrongdoing inside the Gold coast network. Tending to the examination questions, the previous information exhibits that segment qualities and news and data both are identified with occupants dread of wrongdoing in this way, presuming the responses to explore question one and two are, valid, there is a connection The third exploration question enquiring the connection between network attributes and inhabitants dread of wrongdoing, despite the fact that the information finished up there is a slight relationship, it isn't as huge as different factors. Bipolar Disorder in the United States - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1288 Downloads: 9 Date added: 2019/07/31 Category Medicine Essay Level High school Tags: Bipolar Disorder Essay Did you like this example? Bipolar disorder is one of the top mental disorders that has impacted majority of the united states society. Psychologist know more about bipolar disorder because of so many outbreaks that have occured. According to Monica Ramirez Basco (2000) [b]ipolar I disorder (BPI) is a chronic and severe mental illness characterized by recurrent episodes of major depression and mania (p.287). Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Bipolar Disorder in the United States" essay for you Create order Depression and mania are two of the main symptoms of bipolar disorder when trying to diagnose. Basco (2000) continues on There must be 3 additional manic symptoms occurring concurrently with a euphoric mood or 4 additional symptoms if the mood is irritable to qualify for a diagnosis of mania (pg.288). Bipolar disorder symptoms can be determined in many ways and can be triggered by many aspects in life Goodwin (2016) , onset can be particularly influenced by the stresses of late adolescence, but presentations occur throughout the lifespan with first episodes of mania (p.661). For bipolar disorder, there are many aspects that could cause the trigger of this disorder. According to Goodwin (2016), the onset and course of the disease are probably influenced by early life trauma, life events and alcohol and other drug use (p.661). Trauma from the past, a midlife crisis could cause this disease to finally surface and potentially disrupt day to day life. This disease can occur at any moment throughout life when it is finally triggered by a significant occurrence in life. Bipolar disorder has changed in the aspect the diagnostic criteria Severus Bauer (2013) notes, furthermore, in this chapter, there are now separate diagnostic criteria for manic-like phenomena associated with the use of substances (either substances of abuse or prescribed medications) or with medical conditions (p.1). The DSM-5 has modified bipolar disorder, given these changes, (Severus Bauer 2013) continues on to say, DSM-5 seems to concur with the idea that there has been an under-recognition of bipolar disorders (p.1). Between women and men there is not much of a difference between frequency of mood Difloria Jones (2013) describe the statistics amongst gender, using the Diagnostic Interview for Psychosis, Morgan et al. (2005) found that lifetime symptom profiles were similar for men and women, with the exception of the item dysphoria and depressed mood, which was more frequent in women (84.9%) than men (74.6%) (p.443). Dysphoria and depressed mood are understandable due to the fact that women have periods and other hormones that affect their mood. Whereas men they do not want to be seen as weak so they keep to themselves so there might be more men that are not accounted for due to this social norm. In other cases amongst children it is predominantly identified as Severus Bauer (2013) reports, The diagnosis is most often assigned to young patients presenting with a (first) major depressive episode (p.1). This is one thing that bipolar and bipolar II has the most in common is its onset symptom. The origin of bipolar disorder has been relevant for many years Tondo, Vazquez Baldessarini (2016) discuss how, early descriptions of what is now recognized as bipolar disorder (BD) date to ancient and medieval writers, and others through the 18th century [1, 2] (p.353). Bipolar disorder has been amongst the science of psychology for centuries and now (Tondo et al. 2016) beleived , the current concept of Bipolar Disorder emerged from MDI in the mid-20th century, based primarily on separation of illnesses with manic or hypomanic phases and depressions as well as conditions marked primarily with recurrent major depressive episodes [1, 6-8] (p.353). The topic of bipolar disorder has grown over the years with different phases and conditions to add onto what psychology continues to learn in this era. Sherman (2011) hypothesized, the evolution of an extreme, complex set of adaptations such as bipola r I disorder requires that strong selective pressures be exerted on a small homogeneous population over a long period of time, which in fact describes the circumstances of Neandertal during the Pleistocene (p.114). Sherman explains how bipolar disorder is a development biological modification when Neanderthals went through the first ice age their your bodies were in distress and triggers the disease. The treatment I chose for bipolar disorder is cognitive-behavior therapy. According to Basco (2000), the cognitive changes include changes in the thinking process as well as the content of these thoughts(p.288). While treating bipolar disorder this would be amongst the transformation that would be occurring while under this treatment. Cognitive-behavioral therapy has benefited bipolar disorder (Basco 2000) compared to those assigned to receive standard clinical care, those in the CBT group were significantly less likely to have significant adherence problems, including being less likely to terminate lithium against medical advice (p.290). Cognitive-behavioral therapy has improved according to Basco (2000) they showed significant increases in time to first recurrence of mania (65 vs. 17 weeks) in th ose participating in the CBT intervention compared to subjects in the control group as well as a reduction in the number of manic episodes over an 18-month period (p.290). This treatment has shown in this study to improve the health of people with bipolar disorder as well as control their phases of each stage in this disorder. This will also improve the behavior over a shorter time period compared to others. Goodwin (2016) also suggest, naturalistic data strongly supplement data from clinical trials in supporting efficacy for lithium, valproate, carbamazepine and dopamine antagonists/partial agonists in long-term treatment (p.663). These supplements are supported to be used for long-term use. I chose the cognitive theory to help support and treat this bipolar disorder the most. The cognitive theory I believe could aid this disease because it is potentially working from the inside out. I took into consideration an article written by Windy Dydren (2011) about Albert Ellis and cognitive behavioral therapy. In the article Dryden (2011) explain how rational emotional behavioral therapy which is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy is broken down into mental thought, it follows from this that the negative emotions that stem from irrational beliefs (known as unhealthy negative emotions or UNEs) are qualitatively different from those that stem from rational beliefs (known as healthy negative emotions or HNEs) (p.213). Bipolar disorder involves an abundance of emotions that are positive and negative Dryden (2011) notes, other approaches to CBT tend to advocate a quantitative theory of emotions where the goal of intervention is to reduce the intensity of negative emotions and whe re no distinction is clearly made between UNEs and HNEs (p.213). Cognitive behavioral therapy in the aspect of the cognitive perspective can help understand what triggers people with bipolar disorders thoughts, and how we can restrain or decrease the unhealthy negative feelings according to Ellis. I think the cognitive theory is reteaching Jean Piagets cognitive theory Carey, Zaitchik, Bascandziev (2015) explain, Piagets body of work gave the field dozens of robust phenomena that suggest incommensurabilities, phenomena that captured the fields attention because children are locked into patterns of judgment that lead them to internal contradictions and are incoherent from the point of view of the later (adult) conceptual system (p.40) The habits you have as a child could continue on into adulthood which could bring on the symptoms of bipolar because of repressed emotion. This also leads to the mechanism we use as children carry on into adulthood Carey et al. (2015) explains Piaget offered, insights from cognitive science, including history and phi losophy of science, have allowed us to go well beyond equilibration of assimilation and accommodation as what we can say about the learning mechanisms underlying the construction of the adult conceptual repertoire (p.41). The bridge between child and adult cares many stages of learning which I think people with bipolar should learn to cope with negative thought and attitudes towards themselves. Bipolar disorder continues to develop and define itself even more as we research the reasons why it came to be and what we can do to relieve its symptoms.

The Feminist Thought Is Old Enough - 1412 Words

The Feminist thought is old enough to have a history complete with a set of labels: liberals,radical,marxist/socialist, and psychoanalytic ( with the exception of several more). Each school of feminism that’s been considered has offered explanations and solutions for women’s oppression that are rooted either in society’s political and economic structures or in humanbeings’ sexual and reproductive relationships, roles, and practices. Liberal feminists claimed that equipping women with the same rights and opportunities men enjoy may be enough to eliminate gender discrimination. Radical feminists thought otherwise. They insisted that if gender equality is the goal, we must first examine men’s and women’s sexual and reproductive rights and†¦show more content†¦Finally, Marxist and socialist feminists considered that unless capitalist economic structures are terminated, people will continue to be divided into two oppositional classes, the haves and the have-nots, and because of the ways in which capitalism and patriarchy boost each other, women, more than men, will find themselves in the groups of the have-nots. In contrast to liberal, radical, and Marxist/socialist feminists, psychoanalytic feminists sustain that the fundamental explanation for a women’s way of acting is rooted deep in women’s persona, specifically, in a women’s way of thinking about themselves as a women. By no means was Sigmund Freud a feminist, however psychoanalytic feminists have found in his writings pointers about how to better understand the causes and consequences of women’s oppression. Freud’s theories about psychosexual development interrupted his late-nineteenth-century Viennese contemporaries not so much because he addressed traditionally taboo topics, but because he theorized that all sexual â€Å"aberrations,† â€Å"variations,† and â€Å"perversions† are simply stages in the de velopment of normal human sexuality. According to Freud, children go through distinct psychosexual developmental stages, and their gender identity as adults is the result of how well or badly they have weathered this process. Lie Is Wrong free essay sample

Since the early age, we have taught that lying is wrong and hurts people including ourselves. But is it always wrong? There are certain situations in life where you have no choice. Firstly, let’s imagine that we are visiting someone very sick at the hospital. Patient is looking really bad, so we can say that he is not feeling well and we don’t know if there is any hope for him to get better. Will we tell him the true? NO. We will rather say: â€Å"You look so much better†, or â€Å"You will get well soon, you’ll see†. We don’t want him to notice our concern, because he might feel worse knowing how bad he look in our eyes. So lying is good when it can make someone feel better. Secondly, lying is acceptable if it helps avoid conflicts and solves the problems. When a girl asks her boyfriend about his ex-girlfriend, what will happen if he tells her the truth that his ex-girlfriend is more beautiful than her? That girl will surely get angry and will not talk to her boyfriend for many days. We will write a custom essay sample on Lie Is Wrong or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Being too honest can also lead to problem. Thirdly, when a little boy asks his mother what does she think about his drawing, which is quite horrible, he doesn’t want to hear that she doesn’t like it. When she tell him that she think it’s nice, the boy will feel appreciated and it will encourage him to continue working on his skills. Some lying is acceptable, some is not. In my opinion we need to lie in specific situations because the truth would hurt while the lie can help avoid unnecessary problems and protect people we care about. Completely opposite thing is lying to help ourselves escape from responsibility. My parents always teach me that â€Å"lie has short legs†, so it’s better to accept the consequences of our actions than to lie. Even though the truth is good, it is never simple.

Mcdonalization Essays - McDonalds, George Ritzer,

Mcdonalization Is Mcdonaldization Inevitable? George Ritzer's, Mcdonaldization of Society, is a critical analysis of the impact on social structural change on human interaction and identity. According to Ritzer, Mcdonaldization ?is the process by which the principles of the fast-food restaurant are coming to dominate more and more sectors of American society as well as rest of the world? (Ritzer, 1). Ritzer focuses on four foundations of Mcdonaldization: efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. These are the commandments of any rationalized corporation. However, they are not carried out from the point of view of the consumer. Efficiency, for example, may entail the placing of great inconveniences upon a consumer for the sake of efficient management. Calculability may involve hiding certain information from the consumer. Predictability and control may involve a company's ability to predict and control consumer behavior, not the consumer's ability to predict what kind of product or control what kind of service he gets. Ritzer calls such breakdowns the irrationality of rationalization. Ritzer points out the irrationality of rationality, as all of the supposed benefits of Mcdonaldized systems backfire: waiting in long lines, suspect quality, little or no customer service, little or no customer service, the illusion of large quantities for low prices, and severely limited selection of choice. Throughout Mcdonaldization of Society, Ritzer describes Mcdonaldization as largely negative and often destructive. While Mcdonaldization is rapidly taking over American society and spreading to the rest of the globe, it is not something unjustly imposed on the American people. The consumerist culture of America has groomed the public to seek efficiency, calculability, predictability, and control. These principles grow in importance and value in contemporary America. Even when given the choice to avoid a Mcdonaldized establishment or product, people will flock to it. I agree with Ritzer's analysis of a Mcdonaldized society, but I feel that Ritzer has failed to provide any real solutions to the Mcdonaldization process. I will support Ritzer's analysis of the Mcdonaldization process, but also show that it is inevitable and essential in the American society to have a rationalized system. Ritzer stresses that ?Mcdonaldization? does not just refer to robotlike assembly of food. Rather, this process, occurring throughout society, is transforming our lives. ?In the 1980s and 1990s Mcdonaldization has extended its reach into more and more regions of society, and those areas are increasingly remote from the heart of the fast-food business? (Ritzer, 137). Shopping malls are controlled environments of approved design, logo, colors, and opening and closing hours. ?For those people who wish to see Europe, a package tour rationalizes the package. People can efficiently see, in a rigidly controlled manner, many sights while traveling in conveyances, staying in hotels, and eating in fast-food restaurants just like those at home? (Ritzer, 21). ?USA Today? produces the same bland, instant news- in short, unanalytic pieces that can be read between gulps of the Mcshake or the Mcburger. Is this all bad? Not necessarily. Efficiency does bring reduced prices. But at a cost, a loss of something difficult to define or quantify, a quality of life washed away by rationalization. When I travel, for example, had I taken a packaged tour, I never would have had the opportunity to have all the unique experiences that I've had. However, the costs may be even simpler than that. For example, just recently I was ordering food through the drive-thru during lunch hour. The employee at the window was already stressed from trying to work too fast, gave me large cokes in a flimsy cardboard container. The coke went from the window onto to my car seat. Later it was established that the lids weren't even properly placed on the glasses. This is also and example of the irrationality of rational systems. The lines at the fast-food restaurants can be very long, and waiting to get through the drive-thru can even take longer than going inside. In addition, Ritzer explains that in Mcdonaldization establishes control through the substitution of nonhuman for human technology. He explains that ?...these two elements are closely linked. Specifically, replacement of human by nonhuman technology is often oriented towards greater control. The great source of uncertainty and unpredictability in a rationalizing system are people-either the people who work within those systems or the people who are served by them? (Ritzer, 148). For example, in my telemarketing job, individuality is frowned upon. The idea is to read the screen and deviate as little as possible. The human employee is not required to think, just follow the instructions and push

Outline the basic principles of archaeological excavation - Essay Example It is at this stage also that the permits to excavate a certain place have to be acquired. The process cannot just happen without the consent of the in charge bodies (Balme & Paterson, 2006 p98). This particular stage involves figuring out what procedures to be used in the excavation progression. There is a wide range of processes ranging from the simple to complex methods. The equipment to be used to excavate should also decide at this juncture and ensure that it will get the work done (Balme & Paterson, 2006 p9106) These should be set up to provide proper working areas to examine the discovered artifacts. This ensures that the transport of discoveries that might damage them or lead to loss of important information is totally avoided. This phase involves putting together all the content of the whole process and sorting it out. This stage finally makes sense of the entire excavation process by organizing and placing all the information in a manner that is easily comprehensible (Balme & Paterson, 2006 p113). This is the final stage in the excavation process. After all the data has been analyzed and put in order, the final verdict can be given about what was discovered. In conclusion, in order to achieve the desired results, the excavation process must follow a series of steps and ensure everything is done

Evolution of Human Sexuality Essay Example for Free

Evolution of Human Sexuality Essay What is the difference between sex and sexuality? Over the years human sexuality has been a debate that has never been won. Each and every day there are person who expresses their sexuality differently and others considered them to be taboo. Perfect by nature that’s what we ought to be but because of self indulgence with choice we have developed sexuality. According to Gainor sex is refer to as the person’s biological status and it is typically categorized as male, female or intersex. Then what is sexuality? Has sexuality given us our gender identity and sexual orientation? Thus I will expound on the history of sexuality and how it has evolved. As early as the populations of the Hebrews sex was vital to their lively hood. The Hebrews considered the act of sex the bond to a monogamy relationship; one man, one wife according to Rabbi Tulushkin; but if a woman was childless or developed an abnormality such as a boil would lead to the grounds of divorce which rarely happened. They also thought that sex was the ‘divine injunction’ of procreation thus homosexuality was strongly disapproved of. They believed that marital bonds would be strengthened the heterosexual relationships and create a strong bond for the family. Although they had clear preference for monogamy relationship, polygamy was permissible. On the other hand many cultures such as the ancient Greeks normalized or promoted homosexuality among the adult males who were soldiers and older males with male youths; usually teenagers, entering into pedagogic friendships or love affairs that also had an erotic dimension. If sexual, the relationship lasted until the youth was ready for adulthood and marriage therefore, it was not suppose to threaten the institution of the family. Women had no status or rights than slaves in their society only giving them a job as concubines or house wives; they were treated like chattels. Beastality and Sadism were practiced of the world of ancient Rome. These sexual acts were only found among men of hierarchy. Although bestiality and sadism were accepted in their era, homosexuality was considered to be a threat to the family. After the crucifixion of Christ, Christians thought that masturbation and prostitution were sinful. Sexual pleasure even within the marriage was considered to be a sinful act from the days of Eve and Adam. According to Saint Augustine sexual lust ,shame and sexual intercourse during marriage were passed down from Adam and Eve were considered to be inherently evil therefore the only way they could have salvation was through celibacy. Hence, Christians recognize sex for procreation and not for self satisfaction. The Bible is considered to be the oldest book made by man and inspired by god but within the Indian culture the Kama Sutra was held has the bible of sexual pleasure. It gave a descriptions of ways in which a man or a female can seduced their partner and get them sexually aroused. They considered sex a spiritual gift that god gave them to expressed themselves. The Chinese also saw the act to be spiritual and was anything but sinful. The man is suppose to absorb more of his wife natural essence ‘yin’ and to bring his wife to orgasm which is used as a channel for the flow of energy and enhance his own masculine essence ‘yang’. As the world got revolutionized the conception of sex and sexuality changed drastically. During this time women got the opportunity to be liberated to vote and attend academic studies. Most religious practices became oblivious. Many Christians have adopted the view that there is no sin whatsoever in the uninhibited enjoyment of marital relationships One factor in the change of values pertaining to sexual activities was the improvement of the technologies. Technology became the mastermind of our social and emotional behaviors in our everyday life . Instances, masturbation has been seen as the norm in our society especially with pornography being so rampant. This affects the enjoyment of sex as the actual act being replaced by virtual reality. In most developing countries, fear of epidemic has drastically changed many aspects of twentieth century human sexuality. Fear of contracting AIDS and other sexual transmitted diseases has driven a revolution in educating person about sex which now centers far more the use of protection and abstinence. Bestiality remains illegal in most countries and condoned in none. Thus anyone carrying out this kind of practice will be subjected to punishment. This good gift of sex has been perverted and corrupted in our secular world, which is why it is such a struggle for most persons. The idea of including the perfection of one’s self in the realm of moral behavior is appealing. Indeed, I believe this to be the core purpose of human existence. Although, there are medieval practices still been carried out today most customs that were seen then are considered to be taboo and non-religious. Human behavior has changed in many ways than one but the understanding of human identity is still being questioned.

Essay --

A market is a process of buyers and sellers exchanging good and services. Buyer is a group that determines the demand side of the market, whether it is consumers purchasing goods or firm purchasing inputs, while seller is a group that determines the supply side of the market, whether it is firms or companies selling their goods or resources owners selling their inputs. So, the market can be an interaction of buyers and sellers that determine market prices and output through the forces of supply and demand. DEMAND The definition of the demand is the amount of goods that consumers are willing and able to buy at a particular price. According to law of demand, there is an inverse relationship between price of goods and quantity demanded of goods and services. In a better way of explanation, when price of goods and services increase, the quantity demanded for foods and services will be decrease, vice versa. There are some reasons that show that why there is an inverse or negative relationship between price and quantity demanded. Firstly, since everyone likes to save money and buy cheap goods, so, consumers will only buy more goods and services at lower prices than higher prices, vice versa. Next, another reasons for negative relationship is diminishing marginal utility, which means, in a given time period, a buyer will feel less satisfaction from each successive unit consumed so consumers will only buy added units if the price was reduced. Lastly, there are the substitution and income effects of a price change. For the substitution effect, it states that an increase in the price of goods will encourage customers to buy alternatives goods, for example, when the price of meat increases, the quantity demanded for meat will be decrease as ... ... the indirect business tax increase, people will invest less and lead the aggregate demand to be decrease, ideally to a long-run, full –employment level of RGDP. This results a lower price level and full employment output; a new short and long-run equilibrium. After government had lower the government spending, increase the taxes and lower the transfer payment, the aggregate demand will be decreasing. Then with the help of multiplier, the aggregate demand curve shifts to the left even further. LRAS PRICE LEVEL SRAS Multiplier effect RGDPNR In a nutshell, when there is no more shortage or surplus problem, quantity demand is equal to quantity supply; there will be market equilibrium and after government had applied the expansionary fiscal policy for recession and contractionary fiscal policy for inflation, the economy problems will be solved.

Teens on Social Networking - Free Essay Example

Sample details Pages: 4 Words: 1185 Downloads: 5 Date added: 2019/04/10 Category Society Essay Level High school Tags: Social Media Essay Did you like this example? Maybe the single most powerful force in our society today is our media. It never sleeps, it has something to say about almost everything, and it has an amazing influence on virtually every aspect of our lives. It may be that success or failure in any endeavor depends on the media it creates and the success or failure of that media. Don’t waste time! Our writers will create an original "Teens on Social Networking" essay for you Create order In response to the growth of media, society has come to depend on media to tell us what we think or what we should be thinking about important issues that include how we see ourselves and others. Media (too often) defines how we come to understand profound issues that involve race, gender, ageism, politics and economics. Given the devolving power of media to send messages, and influence out thinking and active responses to the positive and negative messages sent, it is greatly disconcerting to realize that medias greatest influence may be among our teenagers and pre-teens. Im remembering when I was a little girl playing with my Dads cell phone. It was small and it flipped open and closed. He tried to keep that phone out of my reach, but to me it was a toy and I was ever-ready to handle that phone once he put it down. Back then a phone was just a phone. It was different from its predecessor in that there was no cord attached to it. It was portable and you could make and receive phone calls on it. Technology has moved us forward since then. Now you use your phone to do many, many other things, in addition to making a call. As an example, when I got older, I got my own cell phone and a camera for Christmas. Now my phone is also a camera, and it takes better pictures than my camera ever did. This evolution in technology helped the proliferation of the internet and the advent of social media. New and innovative ideas like websites and applications enabled users to create and share content or to participate in social networking. It could be said that social media has taken over our society. Social media is a way to communicate, express yourself, and stay updated with what is going on in the world. These are all positive things. All of these good things however can become corrupted when we allow ourselves to exist in a place of unreality. Social media makes it easier to compare our lives to those of others, which allows us the opportunity to augment the truth of our lives, to conform to an image of someone elses imagination. These are often not good things. The internet can be both. Social media can be especially impactful with teenagers and pre-teens. For sure, those years are a time in our lives when we are concerned with self-image, fitting in and getting along. Teens and pre-teens are especially vulnerable and naive during these years, and susceptible to outside ideas and influences. Too many of these influences are negative. Teens and pre-teens are often the focus of advertisers who sell their products and ideas through social media. In addition, all of these influences are delivered with a speed that diminishes the opportunity for timely consideration and/or thoughtful deliberation in their decision making. There is lots of data to confirm the impact of advertisers using social media to influence teens and pre-teens. In a single day, teens and pre-teens are exposed to over 3,000 advertising views In response, teenagers spend $155 billion per year. Children 12 years old and younger spend another $25 billion, and both groups influence perhaps another $200 billion of their parents spending per year.*(Mia- this data is from: PEDIATRICS Vol.118 No.6 December 2006, pp. 2563-2569). Media and advertisers using social media now determines for our teens and pre-teens what is Normal. The proliferation of media and advertising sets the standards for teens in everything from food to behavior. The organization named Power Surge produced an internet video which featured short interviews from teens and their perspective of media influences in their lives. The first of these is a young woman whose name is Karla:According to the media? Well condoms are normal, alcohol is normal, intimate physical relationships are normal, dressing like rock stars and in movies is normal, and not dressing up to par makes you second class. **(Mia- the citation for this is:POWER SURGE, 2006. The Media, Media International) My grandfather was a motivational speaker who was in great demand for his dog and pony show. I went with him to one of his presentations when I was in high school, having never seen him work before. We were at a middle school in Pomona. Pops asked a student to join him on the stage. The boy was 13 years old, a Latino student in the 8th grade and agreed to play Jeopardy with Papa. He asked the boy to finish the following phrase: You deserve a break today, so get up and get away to ¦? The student volunteer filled in the phrase correctly by responding: McDonalds. The next student selected was a 13- year old Latina, also in the 8th grade. She was going to play Double Jeopardy and her question was harder. She was asked to identify who this phrase belonged to: Two all-beef patties, special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, on a sesame seed bun. She also replied correctly with McDonalds. As a final act of participation, the students were asked if they had ever been to the principal s office. Neither of them had encountered the principal, and neither of them knew her name. There is evidence that says social media is bad for our mental health because ultimately we compare ourselves to each other which can lead to low self-esteem and a way to escape our reality rather than facing it. There is other literature that suggest that as a society, we are already hooked on the internet, and like with other addictions, it is not going to go away anytime soon. Social media has consumed us at every level: in politics, business and socialization, while simultaneously inspiring things like cyberbullying and online harassment. Then last, social media takes over lives and causes stress. It seems that we become stuck with a particular app. or device and depend on it all the time, without realizing that we are not developing any sort of interaction skills, thereby changing our relationships with real people. Vaguely, I remember a time when we used to talk around the table at dinner. It seems that back then, everyone had something to say and we were trying to say it all at the same time. But I have witnessed the change. There is hardly ever real conversation around the table anymore. Too often we are not able to even have dinner at the same time. In restaurants, it is not uncommon to see a whole family engaged with their individual phones, but not engaged with each other. It seems that we have lost a lot with the advent and utilization of social media. We need to find a way to restore some of what we lost.
